About this event

This exhibition celebrates the beauty and fragility of nature through works from the collection – closely observed studies, topographical views and poetic interpretations

The title alludes to the acronym IRL, often used in social media and gaming. It refers to the actual physical world rather than the online virtual world. In drawing the attention of the viewer to natural world, these artworks also draw attention to the fragility of that world and the need to actively care for, protect and sustain it so that its beauty and benefits can be enjoyed into the future.

The works in this display highlight how artists spend time in nature, closely observing its ever-changing appearance. Their work reflects and translates the natural world in myriad ways – providing us, the viewers, with an opportunity to enjoy and think about the importance of the natural world in all our lives.
