Friends Talk: Being Pagan and Being Christian in Late Antique Ireland with Dr Elva Johnston
Tuesday, 3 December 2024
About this event
Did becoming Christian in late Antique Ireland mean an end to non-Christian beliefs and practices? It is often assumed that Ireland became decisively Christian in the 5th century and that becoming Christian involved the complete replacement of pagan beliefs. However, new material and archaeological evidence, as well as readings of written sources, are revealing a more nuanced and complicated story. This was a time when the boundaries between Christian and non-Christians changed again and again.
